In sections 6-9 and 11-13 of the Doctrine and Covenants, there are several cause and effect situations that the Lord explains to Oliver Cowdry. We, as students, are also able to learn of these commandments and apply them to our lives in order to be a more righteous people, so that we may gain celestial glory. Although each of these sections is full of blessings, I'm going to focus on the magnificent blessings listed in section 6.
1. D&C 6:3- "...Reap while the day lasts, that he may treasure up for his soul everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God."
When talking about missionary work, if we spread the gospel as much as we can, then we gain eternal life and are able to live with our Father in Heaven once again. This scripture reveals to me that God wants so much for His church to be established all over the world. The gospel is one of the greatest things on this earth, and the Lord wishes for us to share it with those we love.
2. D&C 6:5- "Therefore, if you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you."
If we ask of our righteous desires to the Lord, then He will let it be known unto us. If we want to know the knowledge of something in particular, we are encouraged to ask the Lord; if our desires are righteous, we will get an answer. While on this earth, the Lord wishes for us to gain as much knowledge as we can. In our mortality, it is impossible to comprehend the eternal knowledge and blessings there is to know without the help of God. However, with God's help, we are able to know all that we need to know.
3. D&C 6:7- "Seek not for riches but for wisdom, and behold, the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto you, and then shall you be made rich. Behold, he that hath eternal life is rich."
If we seek for all the wisdom we can, then we will become rich with blessings. One of the greatest blessings any of us can receive is the gift of eternal life. When presented with the opportunity to live with our family and our Heavenly Father for all time and eternity, we must do all that we can in order to obtain it. God loves each and every one of us more than we could know. He loves us so much that he blessed us with the chance to live with Him and our families for the rest of our existence.
4. D&C 6:9- "Say nothing but repentance unto this generation; keep my commandments, and assist to bring forth my work, according to my commandments, and you shall be blessed."
If we are constantly repenting, keeping the commandments, and serving the Lord by sharing the gospel, then we will be blessed. Blessings can come in so many different situations and forms. The Lord can bless us with people, actions, and even money. We must do all we can to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the four corners of the earth. It is so important that we also repent of our sins. When we are aiming to set a positive example to those around us, we must be doing all we can to show them how to act and live.
5. D&C 6:13- "If thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God."
If we act on our desires to do good unto others and possess a great faith, then we will be saved in the kingdom of God. Throughout the scriptures, we are often taught that obtaining eternal life is the greatest gift that God could give us. Jesus Christ suffered through all of our sins and pains, so that we are able to live with Him again one day. Being blessed with eternal life shows that God is such a loving father towards us. We are His children, and he wants nothing more than for us to be eternally joyful. Being saved in the kingdom of God will bring us eternal joy.
6. D&C 6:20- "Be faithful and diligent in keeping the commandments of God, and I will encircle thee in the arms of my love."
If we exercise faith and diligently keep the commandments, the Lord will encircle us in the arms of His love. This is such a powerful scripture because it expresses to us how important it is for us to do these things. The image of being encircled in God's arms of love is such a comforting and moving picture. In the footnote of "love", it instructs the reader to go to the Topical Guide and look up "God, Love of." This means that our God is simply a God of love. He expresses so much love for His children, and he does it often. It is not a hard task to be faithful and diligently keep the commandments; it is a small price to pay for the blessings we have and will have.
7. D&C 6:23- "Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God?"
If the Lord speaks peace unto us concerning our troubles, then we must have faith that He will resolve our worries. We are faced with so many concerns and trials in our world today, but if we simply ask the Lord to comfort us, He will. However, we must ask in faith. James 1:6 says, "But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering..." If we ask the Lord for comfort and peace, we must be prepared to have full faith that He will come through.
8. D&C 6:31- "But if they reject not my words, which shall be established by the testimony which shall be given, blessed are they, and then shall ye have joy in the fruit of your labors."
If we spread the word of God by our testimonies, and it is accepted into the hearts of the people, then we shall have joy in knowing that we have saved a soul that is precious unto the Lord. Since the worth of souls is great in the sight of God, we have a duty to bring as many people as we can unto Christ. When we successfully bring the message of the gospel to those around us, we will be blessed with the joy of our work.
9. D&C 6:34- "Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail.
The Lord promises us that if we do good and live a Christ-like life, then the forces of earth and hell cannot prevail over us; we will be saved from the temptations and evils that surround us. This scripture lets us know that if we do good and live righteously, we can LET the powers of earth and hell combine and try to knock us down, but we have the knowledge that they will not succeed. They will not obtain power over us because we have the Lord on our side.
10. D&C 6:37- "...Be faithful, keep my commandments, and ye shall inherit the kingdom of heaven."
If we are faithful and keep the commandments, then we will inherit eternal glory. Eternal glory can consist of eternal salvation, dwelling in the presence of God, and becoming Gods and Goddesses. The possibilities of this marvelous blessing are potentially limitless. It is so powerful and great to know that all we are required to do to obtain this beautiful and glorious blessing is have faith and keep the commandments. It's that simple.
Through these scriptures, I have learned that our Heavenly Father is the most loving, giving, caring, and glorious being that we will ever know. He loves us so much that He strives for us to obtain our eternal life. He cares for us so much that He sent His own son to this earth so that we may have the opportunity to gain eternal life. He gave us the very opportunity to become like Him and inherit His kingdom. It is such a great blessing to know what glories we can obtain if we only exercise faith in the Lord and His son, Jesus Christ, and keep the commandments. What we are required to do is such a simple task in order to achieve such wonderful outcomes.
